THREAD: Tonight, we were made aware of a potentially distressing change to the State Department’s travel website, relating to gender marker changes on passports. (h/t @MOOMANiBE)
In essence, the Department of State has altered how it explains the policy to the public, emphasizing longstanding restrictions in the current policy and deemphasizing trans people’s rights.
Our policy experts have reviewed the website’s changes, as well as minor changes that have been made to the Department of State’s policy handbook. The underlying passport policy for changing gender markers has not been materially altered.
From Executive Director @MaraKeisling: “...this move seems designed to frighten, confuse, and keep trans people from exercising their full rights under the current policy. Transgender people can and absolutely should continue to update and renew their passports."
