Top 10 takeaways from our new gender equality survey with @PlanUSA among 10 to 19 year olds:
1) Boys who played mostly with boy toys growing up (e.g. trucks, guns) v. gender-neutral toys (e.g. legos) are more likely to think about girls' bodies than their brains, hold less egalitarian views, and place less importance on "making the world a better place" as a life goal.
2) Girls who mostly played with girl toys (princesses, etc) are more likely to feel pressure to dress like older women, be sexy or hot, and worry about positive feedback on social media.
3) Kids are surrounded by sexual comments and sexual jokes about girls and women. 47% of girls ages 14 to 19 hear boys making sexual comments or sexual jokes about women every day. 1 in 4 girls ages 10 to 13 hears these comments on a daily basis.
4) 47% of boys ages 14 to 19 have heard their dad or other male family members make sexual comments or sexual jokes about women. This is correlated with boys feeling all kinds of pressures - to hook up with girls, control and dominate others, hide sad/anxious feelings, etc.
5) Hollywood matters. @TIMESUPNOW @TIMESUPLDF
6) Girls and boys are receiving a lot of messages around the objectification of girls and sexuality. Girls are more likely than women to feel judged as sexual objects in their daily lives.
7) Despite pressures, girls are just as likely as boys - if not a bit more - to feel confident, describe themselves as a leader, say a successful career is an important life goal, want to make the world a better place, and to have thought about running for political office.
8) Boys are feeling a lot of gender-based pressures around being masculine, strong, tough, and hiding their feelings. @clairecm wrote a great piece today on it nyti.ms/2MpoFKF
9) Gender equality is a partisan issue among adults....and our data suggest it seeps down to children.
10) Exposure to online porn, playing mostly with boy toys growing up, having a Republican parent, and hearing their father make sexual comments and jokes about women are among the strongest correlates with boys not wanting equal numbers of men and women in power.
