i've been working my way up the distros, making sure linux is still fully unusable. it is.

debian 9 this time. download a .deb, package manager doesn't know what it is. dpkg -i requires su. sudo is not installed.

i'm told it was always this way
you can't run a linux system without sudo. it's not realistic. i also swear to god it was in every version of debian i've ever used before.
after fixing sudo (requires a restart; incredible) by hand using instructions from stackexchange (of course), the process is to run dpkg on the deb, let it fail, then run apt-get install -f. ah yeah of course. that's obvious
