My rubric for work:

Faithfulness to the Word over desired outcome.
Importance of the pastoral 'I don't know.'—@jaredcwilson
Truth, beauty, and goodness.
Sayable theology for normal folks.
When folks ask me, "How do I start writing?" I say, get yourself a mission (not a niche) and don't ever compromise on it.

I want to write true and good things beautifully, be faithful to Gods word, say 'I don't know,' when I don't know, and level the playing ground.
One last thought on this: If I finish a piece, a talk, this book, and can say I've tried my best to work thru this rubric, I can walk away w/o wringing my hands, fretting or crumbling when criticism comes. I don't need to be a sensitive artist/narcissist type, I'm a child of God.
