1/ Have you ever wondered teams building self-driving vehicles design and test their code? Let's say you make a change to the way your car behaves around, say, school kids at intersections. After the fix, do you then drive around, hoping to encounter kids?
2/ Or let's say you're working on a lane-change algorithm. How can you evaluate whether the algorithm is safe given all the (crazy) ways drivers in the passing lane might behave?
3/ We think simulation will be a critical component of any AV company's effort to build safe, reliable, and comfortable software. And we couldn't be more thrilled to support @qasar and Peter and the team at Applied Intuition in their mission

1/ I read that juicy quote in @Eric_Weiner's book "The Geography of Genius". He was speculating that part of Fred Terman's (godfather of Silicon Valley) motivation was the chip on his shoulder from the East Coast's persistent derision of the West Coast in general
2/ "The Establishment" turned out to be wrong, of course, but it took a long time for Stanford to become the @Stanford we know today. But the "chip on the shoulder" is a powerful motivator.

2/ Back then, we called them "personal communicators" (Go) or "pen computers" (Microsoft) or “personal intelligent communicators” (General Magic) or “personal digital assistants” (Apple, Palm) or “tablet or slate computers” (IBM, GRiD)

"Human error" is such an easy target, but explains so little. WHAT are the human errors? WHAT are the systemic issues? Fixing those will be much more fruitful in the short- and medium-term than pushing for self-driving cars, which are still murderin' machines.
30% of all US traffic deaths are caused by drunk driving, so maybe mandatory ignition interlocks would help? Maybe. It's something to explore. It targets the problems in the system versus blaming everything on "human error". cdc.gov/motorvehiclesa…

$150 billion/year could make public transportation across America “free” (ie taxpayer funded) but that cost could be offset completely by dramatically reducing obesity (34% of US population is obese) and car pollution related healthcare issues which cost $300+ billion/year.
2. With advances in AI, autonomous and clean power tech, low-emissions “smart” buses could bring the cost of public transportation down significantly, requiring fewer human drivers and fare monitors, such buses adjusting automatically to peak usage demands
3. Cities in US and across the world have already piloted self-driving buses and shuttles; the cachet of smart tech associated with such experiments could convince people to ditch their stigma around public transportation, helping create lots of tech jobs amp.freep.com/amp/509743002

1/ Will AI replace all jobs?

This dystopia rests on 3 premises:

a) Half jobs done by humans are going to be taken away.

b) Mass joblessness with no way for people without work to quickly re-skill and compete with robots.

c) Mass joblessness results in major global unrest.
2/ Every tech revolution has always destroyed old jobs. (e.g. Farmers have gone from 70% to 2% of our economy).

Technology progress means productivity increases — we achieve more with less.
3/ Doesn’t this mean more unemployment?

Lump of Labor Fallacy: implying amount of work to be done in society is fixed

Human needs are infinite — divine discontent! — and we automate the boring + painful parts of the job, so we get to do more meaningful work (e.g. Coaching)

Uber self-driving car kills pedestrian. Just on a product liability basis, this could be the end of Uber.

One of the things we learned during Waymo v Uber was that Uber knew there were better LIDAR technologies and didn't pursue licensing them.

A company that does not take all available safety precautions is liable for any harm its product does.
But in general, who *didn't* see this coming? Uber self-driving cars were always going to kill people; it was inevitable.
