Watching Berkeley city council candidate and YIMBY voter Ben Gould hold NIMBY incumbent Kate Harrison to account for her numerous anti-housing votes on the council.

As more YIMBYs run for office, NIMBYs will have nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.
Whoa. Harrison just straight up said that Berkeley’s too expensive and homeless people should go be homeless elsewhere.

I mean, NIMBYs are just saying the stuff out loud now.
Now she’s riffing on her climate leadership in encouraging people to something something about factory farms and something something declaring a climate emergency.

There are no factory farms in Berkeley. Lots of polluting cars though, thanks to not enough housing.
Ben and Greg Magofna know their stuff on climate. This math isn’t complicated: “Build more housing near BART.”

2/ But it’s crucial the climate movement get its head out of its ass on this topic. It keeps attacking oil industry - an industry entirely tertiary to oil burning:

The primary cause of oil burning is land use patterns; the secondary cause are carmakers who enable those patterns.
3/ If you change land use patterns, you drastically undermine the auto industry. I’m living proof. Like I said, $250 this year on gas, mostly to visit family in Oregon or friends in Marin (thanks, @Damon_Connolly, for blocking the bike lane on the Richmond bridge).

There’s an enduring myth that it takes forever to build housing in California, and especially in Berkeley.

That’s only true in cities where city officials want it to be true. The University of California, for example, knows better.

i don’t attend many albemarle county board of supervisors meetings, but i have a feeling it’s unusual for there to be nearly equal numbers of cops & members of the general public.
this email was sent out to their mailing list an hour before the meeting was scheduled to start. it’s 1:50 and they still haven’t emerged from closed session. anybody know what the last minute closed session was supposed to be about?
unsurprisingly, the closed session was to discuss legal options re: meeting disruptions. last week’s school board meeting in this same auditorium resulted in six arrests, sending one man to the hospital.

By limiting housing supply, we push up the price of housing (both renting and purchasing). Renters respond to this by either moving further away from their work or paying more in monthly rent.

Home owners? They like it.
Effectively, #NIMBY is a huge regressive tax.

Imagine you make $40k and spend $700 on a 1 bdrm in Madison. Over the past few years your rent probably went up by $1,500/yr. That's the same as if your federal taxes had increased by 50%.

Imagine if Republicans or Democrats proposed increasing income taxes by 50% on the lowest income earners in our country. Totally regressive. There would be a HUGE deal about this. Especially from the left. As there should be.

Council meets starting today. First, a special meeting to fill the vacancy in Ward 33 left by @shelleycarroll, who is running provincially. Because we are so close to a municipal election, this seat must be filled by appointment. List of candidates:
This appointment is a bit tricky because councillors are usually looking to appoint a caretaker councillor - someone who won’t run for the seat with the appointed advantage. So far one candidate, Ken Lister, is also campaigning to represent the area in the upcoming election
City hall’s left-leaning councillors have been unhappy with the appointment of Tory’s pick Lucy Troisi to Pam McConnell’s old seat. There is a fear she’s planning to run despite her word at the time of appointment that she wouldn’t. Could make this appointment interesting

First off, we gotta rethink how we talk about density because TBH, it's not density NIMBYs fear, it's overcrowding and all the threats that an urban mob presents 2/x
