At the council house in the public gallery watching Birmingham City Council debate a #peoplesvote #finalsay on theBrexit deal. Watch live here. civico.net/birmingham/dem…
Passionate speech from @Jonperrybarr on the benefits of the EU and the damage it will cause to Birmingham to leave.
@BrumLeader making the case that 8 of 10 top trading parties for the city are in the EU, the incredible narrowness of the vote in Bham and that no one voted to make our region poorer.
@BrumLeader ‘If Theresa May is confident with the deal she negotiates she should have no fears in putting it back to the public’ This is promising.
@politicalhackuk the will of the people is not set in stone. I don’t want my constituents sold down the river, people should be allowed a final say.
@1oldcodger making reference to the excellent letter written by Labour Councillors to the B’ham Mail of the benefits of EU funding to our universities, the stability the EU has brought to business in the region and peace following the devastation of two world wars.
@MorriamJan pointing out that anyone born after 1974 has grown up as an EU citizen. Young people see Brexit as identity theft.
Cllr Sambrook (Tory) trotting out same old ‘people knew what they were voting for’ ‘we are leaving on 29th March next year’ and EU army. He can’t support the motion. Quel surprise!
Cllr Martin Straker Welds sees this as a chance to take a long hard look at the impact of a bad deal, and calls on @andy4wm to consider the loss of prospects to young people and business. He welcomes the cross party debate and calls for a vote with an option to remain.
@BrumGreenJulien pointing out no one is talking about the underlying causes of Brexit. He supports giving people a final say on the deal.
Cllr Alden (Tory) strangely talks about Venezuela and asks us to move forward to make this city great again. He has swallowed the Brexit pill and opposes the amendment.
Cllr Mackey (Tory). Listing the difficulties busineses are facing in dealing with customs as opposed to the simplicity of dealing within the EU and the problems the drop in the pound is causing. Despite that he supports a hard Brexit 😡
Motion and Labour amendment (which includes people’s vote) voted and carried. 😊😊😊
I’m so proud of @Jonperrybarr and the Birmingham @LibDems team for bringing this historic motion and thank you to @BrumLabour for working together to make it happen.
Also everyone at @euinbrum for the endless campaigning and refusal to give up. And all you fantastic folks who signed the petition!
Thanks also to @fredgrindrod for the support given to @euinbrum and help bringing together the Labour Councillors. #peoplesvote
