My latest for @PRI: During WWII, the US incarcerated 2,200 Japanese Latin Americans. It later denied them citizenship and redress on the grounds that they had entered the country "illegally." A dedicated group of activists continues to fight for justice: pri.org/stories/2018-1…

New Orleans' Camp Algiers was a major entry point for Japanese Latin Americans who were kidnapped and brought to the US during WWII. In many cases they were quarantined and showered in DDT there before being sent to more permanent detention sites.
Thanks to @jonvoss for pointing me to this article, which talks about the site's history as a detention facility for suspected Nazi sympathizers from Latin America. wwno.org/post/wwii-inte…
From Algiers, Japanese Latin American women & married couples w/o children were sent to Texas's Seagoville detention facility. The women were considered "voluntary" internees but in reality most had little choice but to follow their husbands to the US.

I’m a member of DSA and have a lot of hope for the future of socialism but we’ve got to center a radical anti-racist approach if we want our movement to be anything other than a different version of white supremacy.
It’s been extremely disheartening, to say the least, that anti-racism and intersectionality are cast aside as liberal ideologies by some purists within the org, including in my local chapter.
Seattle DSA hosted an excellent anti-oppression training by @AFROSOCDSA this summer but it was optional — we need more trainings like this and it should be mandatory for all members. This won’t derail our movement, it’ll make it stronger and more viable.

"Salt of the Earth" (1954) features a predominantly Mexican American cast and shows that questions of race and class are inseparable from gender. Its production was contested in the US and caused an international incident with Mexico. Brief thread on its history.
The film is based on the 1951 strike against the Empire Zinc Company in Grant County, New Mexico. The cast was mostly comprised of actual miners and their families. The film’s writer, director, and producer had all been blacklisted due to their alleged Communist affiliations.
Californian politician Donald Jackson claimed that the film was "a new weapon for Russia", "deliberately designed to inflame racial hatreds and to depict the United States of America as the enemy of all colored peoples."

Our Chief Executive, David Murray said: "The RAF Benevolent Fund is proud to serve as guardians of the Memorial, built to commemorate the 55,573 members of Bomber Command who died in its service during #WWII. This is the worst example of vandalism we have seen at the Memorial.
David Murray continued: "And it is utterly heart-breaking to see the memory of all those brave airmen disrespected in this way. But like the remarkable men who the Memorial commemorates, we will not rest until we have finished the job."

When the richest man in the world, the Nizam surrendered helplessly to a commoner K.M.Munshi. His army routed, all the people around him had either fled or surrendered themselves, leaving him alone.

As a fmr immigration attorney let me be unambiguously clear. Crossing a boarder to claim asylum is *not* a crime; no under US or international law. Any child separated from a parent under that pretext is done so in direct contravention to the laws of the USA. ⚖ THREAD Pls RT.
If you came to the US without permission to apply for asylum, youmetjod of entry, whether legal or illegal *should* in no way effect your application process. Illegal entry is not a ground of inadmissibility for asylum applicants.
Unlike many other categories of applicants for immigration benefits, ppl seeking asylum in the US are not barred by having made an illegal entry; for example, sneaked across the U.S. border or overstaying a valid visa (one of the top ways people are in the country illegall).

There is no more contentious issue in America than illegal immigration. The open borders crowd will use ever emotional lever they can find to bend the law. The recent outcry over separating children from their law-breaking parents is a clear example. yahoo.com/finance/news/f…
Nothing has separated the wheat from the chaff like this policy. Even people like Franklin Graham and Barbara Bush are vehemently opposed to it calling it “disgraceful” and comparing it to the interning of Japanese. But what these people never do is offer solutions.
Nor do they complain about crime-breaking American citizens being separated from their children. The silence on that issue speaks especially loudly in the area of immigration. Clearly many American see crossing the border illegally as a minor crime, if a crime at all.
