This thread will throw some facts on the Rupee depreciation which is the talk of the town nowadays especially the opposition and the Anti-Modi gang #RupeeAt73
Here we will compare the currency values of 21 countries - a mix of Asian, Non-Asian, European, American and African countries - some Developed and some Developing countries vis-a-vis $ Dollar starting from 2004 till Sept 2018 #RupeeAt73
Below is the list of countries chosen for comparison with their Developed / Developing status. Note - Developed / Developing status has been derived from Google Search. So I may be wrong at some places. Corrections are welcome #RupeeAt73
The analysis is in the form of graphs which basically shows the %depreciation of each currency over the years - 2004-2009, 2009-2014, 2004-2014, 2014-2018 and Jan-2018-Sep-2018. You guessed it right - Focus is on the UPA period vs NDA-2 period #RupeeAt73
First focus will be on the UPA period i.e. 2004-2014 and see how Rupee performed over the decade between 2004-2009 (UPA1) and 2009-2014 (UPA2), followed by 2004-2014 period. The currency values are monthly average taken for Aug month for simplicity and consistency. #RupeeAt73
The source for the currency values is -
For the years 2008-2018 - x-rates.com/average
For year 2004 -
imf.org/external/np/fi…
For a few currencies, as the data is not available on both the sources, I have googled a little and there may be some deviations from monthly average and the month. Again corrections are welcome #RupeeAt73
2004 to 2009 (UPA 1) Rupee depreciated by 3.86% during this period. As you can see, half of the currencies actually appreciated against $Dollar during this period. So Indian currency was lacklustre considering the performance of other currencies during the same period #RupeeAt73
2009 to 2014 (UPA 2) Rupee depreciated by 18.72% One of the worst performing currencies among the 21 countries in this period especially when $Dollar was not very strong. UPA2 scams and corruption resulted in India being listed as part of Fragile 5 countries in 2014 #RupeeAt73
Overall, Rupee depreciated by 23.83% between 2004 to 2014 during the UPA rule. #RupeeAt73
More to come on this thread!!!
Next set of tweets will analyze the performance of Rupee during the NDA2 rule in the last 4 years. #RupeeAt73
The hashtag should have been #RupeeAt74 😀
Post 2014, I will demonstrate the Rupee situation in 3 graphs - May-2014 to Jan-2018 where the Rupee outperformed most of the currencies, Jan-2018 to Sep-2018 which spoiled the run denting the Rupee performance during the overall period May-2014 to Sep-2018.
May-14 to Jan-18 (NDA 2) Rupee depreciated by 6.82% during the period. But if we see the performance of other currencies vis-a-vis $Dollar, Rupee performed much better against a strong $Dollar
May-14 to Sep-18 (NDA 2) Rupee depreciated by 17.74% during this period. One may tend to believe that Rupee has performed badly during this period similar to what it did between 2009 to 2014 (18.72%) But then look at the graph and compare it with 09-14 graph.
As you can see, even though Rupee depreciated by 17.74%, it still ranked 10th in the list of 21 countries in the performance while between 09-14, it was ranked 19th.
A couple of observations -
<1> Between 09-14, there were 8 currencies which appreciated against $Dollar, and Rupee was ranked 19th. That means $Dollar was weak during this period and Rupee performed very badly.
<2> But between 14-18, $Dollar outperformed all the currencies and emerged strong during this period. And still Rupee was ranked 10th during this period. One would probably agree that Rupee held its ground and emerged stronger compared to other currencies vis-a-vis $Dollar.
In nutshell, 10th rank under a Strong Dollar VS 19th under a Weak Dollar !!!
Rupee has lost its most value in this year (11.71%) probably due to trade wars between US & China and probably other reasons best known to economists. Rupee has been Asia’s worst performing currency this year but overall it has still done better in the past 4.5 years.
We have seen further depreciation in Rupee in the month of October breaching 74 #RupeeAt74 only to recover some ground today. There are many more aspects that I would like to cover here but I will save it for another day.
Thanks for watching this space and do like and retweet it!!!
Rupee has been going strong for the past couple of weeks. Will it go below 70? #Rupee

Ending this thread with 2 charts that compares Rupee with the remaining 20 countries. These charts will show how Rupee has performed vis-a-vis other currencies of Developed/Developing nations.
Comparison is for two periods - UPA2 i.e. May09-May14 and NDA2 i.e. May14 -Mar19
As one can see, between 2009 and 2014, Rupee performed very badly and it depreciated against most of the currencies (17 out of 20)
But between 2014 and 2019, Rupee performed exceptionally well and it appreciated against 13 out of 20 currencies.
