This is a good point. The media gave him airtime at the start and Dems cited those allegations in demands for Kavanaugh to withdraw. Most of the criticism now is based on current recognition that it hurt their case against Kavanaugh, not that he tried to falsely smear Kavanaugh.
Reminds me of Harry Reid's reaction when confronted with lying about Romney's taxes in 2012 (which media covered): "Romney didn't win, did he?"

It was alright because it worked.

Same here. The only issue they have with it is that it didn't work.
The lesson Dems took away from that is that they can smear people on the right with false accusations and the press will assist in those efforts.

They applied that very lesson to Kavanaugh. Only this time the smears went too far, the truth came out, and it backfired on them.
