I am currently fuming about other way bigger stuff,.so let's take this silliness on instead. Point by point.
1. Don't ask prof if you have to buy req book coz duh required! BS. It is helpful. Study is easier. But borrowing is fine. Check library.
2. Don't ask prof to send you personal deadline reminders. Yeah don't. But they may have automated reminders, check it out!
3. Submit assigned work/no extra credit. Yep! But check course outline - it may mention extras. And let prof know if you're having problems.
Note: submit it even if you could have done better with extra time. That is always true - inc of the next thing you need to move on to.
4. Take opportunities to improve. Well that's what uni/learning is about so am all on board with this one.
5. Don't ask for extra credit again? OK but profs have an obligation not to give any - some do and it's v.v. unfair to non-asking students.
6. Respect no cell phone policy. Agree but am ok with unobtrusive checking. Distracting yourself is dumb, but really don't distract others!
7. Don't dictate your papers. Why not? Do whatever gets you over writer's block. Do always proofread though. Preferably a few times.
8. Be resourceful on your own first. YES! And when you ask for help, let your prof know what you tried. That helps us help you better.
9. Don't tell your prof off. True this likely won't help you and may hurt (though likely not much). As long as you're ok with that, whatevs.
10. Don't grade grub. Sure. But check your paper/grade & ask if there's an error or you don't understand the grade. That helps you improve.
11. Don't call your prof on their private phone # late at night. Yeah, that would be weird. For work matters get in touch during work hours.
12. Show up to appointments. As you would with anyone, I hope?
13. Don't involve your parents. I agree. BUT since some high influence parents get to interfere to help their kids, why shouldn't all?
Why should some kids have to pull themselves up by their bootstraps while mommy & daddy grease wheels for others? (More on that later.)
14. Profs want you to succeed. True! We want you to learn things, though, not just get a good % on a test. Our def'ns of suceed may differ.
15. Think about how you want to be remembered. How narcissistic of the writer! Why should students care how a prof remembers them?
For starters, profs can't remember every student, so this advice makes students worry about something that doesn't happen anyway.
And it isn't ultimately about what someone else thinks of you is it? Isn't it about what you get out of the experience - ie what you learn?
So figure out what you can get out of a class, and do your best to make sure you get it. Work hard, learn things, ask questions. Improve.
If you hate a prof or class, fine, it happens. If you think a prof hates you (a) they probably don't; & (b) who cares? There are others.
So re these rules: meh. Take the ones that help you to learn and use them. Be polite, yes. But don't waste time worrying about your image.
