TOGG requires more effort than most books for me: not surprising as a Canadian (or really any) history neophyte.
Big pic historical pt I hadn't noticed: the English, French and American revolutions were all about tax (twined with inequality & pol power)
Tax change drivers include changing resource distribution and academic scribblers, but also technology and bureaucratic competence.
And at Confederation, we are really talking tiny populations. Would love to know what % of pop in 1860s ends up in history books cf 2010s.
So TOGG tells how Canada's tax & fiscal federalism systems evolved in response to particular tax revolts arising from social/voter pressure.
Biggest surprise so far: how much 'race' mattered. Lots of obsession re whether the French/Catholics/Indians/Chinese were paying their share
