TOGG requires more effort than most books for me: not surprising as a Canadian (or really any) history neophyte.
Big pic historical pt I hadn't noticed: the English, French and American revolutions were all about tax (twined with inequality & pol power)
Tax change drivers include changing resource distribution and academic scribblers, but also technology and bureaucratic competence.
And at Confederation, we are really talking tiny populations. Would love to know what % of pop in 1860s ends up in history books cf 2010s.
So TOGG tells how Canada's tax & fiscal federalism systems evolved in response to particular tax revolts arising from social/voter pressure.
Biggest surprise so far: how much 'race' mattered. Lots of obsession re whether the French/Catholics/Indians/Chinese were paying their share

OK, so yesterday I noted some incoherent comments re demographics and future demand for PSE in Ontario. I was a little flippant re baby boom, bust and echo in that tweet, as @AlexUsherHESA pointed out.

I could not leave it there.
Did I not take a course called "Econ & Demographics", with David Foot, Mr Boom Bust and Echo himself? I did.

Did we use his book throughout? We did. (Can I find it now? I cannot - v irritating.)

Do I recall the maxim "Every year we get a year older"? Oh my word, do I ever.
So here are some things that make me cautious about doom & gloom scenarios for PSE.

Every year we get a year older - but the population doesn't. You can't just look at the population aged 10-14yo now to estimate the 20-24yo population 10 years from now, tempting as that is.

I am currently fuming about other way bigger stuff,.so let's take this silliness on instead. Point by point.
1. Don't ask prof if you have to buy req book coz duh required! BS. It is helpful. Study is easier. But borrowing is fine. Check library.
2. Don't ask prof to send you personal deadline reminders. Yeah don't. But they may have automated reminders, check it out!

Once upon a time I was a young lefty uni student studying economics in a place and time that was dominated by right wing politics.
I wrote essays denouncing the int'l fin instituitions, arguing assumptions of economics meant it was "worse than useless", ...
... saying we needed more govt intervention to save the environment and higher taxes on the rich...

This surveillance tech is deployed at Sabarimala currently with Artificial Intelligence based high-res cameras fitted onto drones synced with various databses and biometric profiles under what they call "Predictive Policing" - stopping crime before it starts or future crimes.
Under Predictive Policing Hot Spot analysis police personnel will analyze & predict geographical areas of increased crime on basis of crime data. It will process all patterns relating to time of occurrence, exact locations, even shops, hotels, bars or other establishments.
Detectives will study social & infrastructural environment of a location & its local demography. Analysis will also be made of such things as local weather conditions, days on which offences are committed, whether it was around pay-day etc. But how they know its your pay-day? :)

Tragically what the #CorruptGOP doesn't seem to get is that because they are not dealing in facts, & they are propagating falsehoods to their base, an entire generation of Republican voters, workers, apparachik's at every level; the U.S.A. loses ultimately. There are
People basing real decisions, at real jobs- both public & private sector-on false information. We have the most powerful military, biggest Economy, in the most industrialized nation in the world making Domestic & Foreign Policy based on fasle information.
This can & will end only one of two ways. Either we reverse course before catastrophic consequence or we experience what could be the most catastrophic multi-national event that has occurred since WW2 & the most grave consequences since our Nation's inception nearly 300 yrs ago.

#History/#Art thread – From my recent trip to Madurai/Tirunelveli. On Jain sites (some with a rich history dating back to at least the 3rd cent. BCE), early Pandyan rock-cut cave temples (7th-8th cent. CE) & the amazing Vettuvan koil.

Before I start on the places, the history around all this is fascinating & splits opinion. Is it apt to call the script Tamili/Tamil Brahmi? Did it develop independently in the Tamil country/come with the Jain monks from the north? Were 8,000 Jains actually impaled in Madurai?>
