Some notes on Soyuz escape system terminology. The SAS (система аварийного спасения, sistema avariynovo spaseniya, System of Emergency Rescue) has multiple bits and pieces...
The DU SAS (SAS engine installation) is the tower with solid rockets that is jettisoned early in the ascent. The GO (nose section or fairing) has two bits, the 'uvodimaya chast' (ejecting bit?) over the orbital and descent modules and a lower part over the service module
The main (uvodimaya chast') bit of the fairing has motors call RDG (Rocket Engine - Fairing) which pull the upper part of Soyuz away.
There are also small motors called DSS which I think are for jettisoning the DU SAS tower, but not sure about that
Anyway, a lot of us are used to saying "SAS" when what we mean is the "DU SAS" which has caused confusion today. The DU SAS (the tower) was jettisoned prior to the abort. The RDG engines (which are also part of the SAS) were used to pull Soyuz away from the stack in today's abort
