Short thread on character:

There are many descriptions of character, but one of my favorites is by a conservationist long ago: “A man’s reputation is the opinion people have of him. His character is what he really is” Jack Miner.
A favorable reputation is good to have and we learn young that a bad reputation is not a good thing to have.

While persuing a favorable reputation may be good advice I believe having good character to be more important.
Those with impeccable character may not have good reputations. We know that misrepresentation, slander, and/or false reports can destroy a reputation.

But these cannot destroy our character. Our character is in our control whereas reputation is the perception of others.
We also hear examples of those with good reputations that have little to no character. They sooner or later are found to be a part of distasteful or dishonest activities.
I won't bore you with a list a attributes that make up what having good character means to me, but I advise you think of what it means to you.
I've heard it said that it is better to have character than to be one, but I admit that some of my most favorite people are both.
