Theresa May: very good progress made since Salzburg, teams of negotiators working "very hard". We've solved most of the WA issues.
Asked directly if she would seek a one year transition, May says: "What we will be doing is looking at the issues relating to the backstop on NI, I believe it is possible by working together to find a resolution to that issue...
"and a resolution that ensures we are able to move forward with the full package, with the future partnership as well. Considerable progress has been made since Salzburg, by working instensively over the next weeks I believe we can achieve a deal"

Sooo...happy new year all. And back we are with more of the same. So here's a quick thread on this week's Brexit manoevrings:

1) The European Council on Dec 13 was pretty clear: clarification on the backstop, yes - but no legal instrument (Dublin was particularly against that)
2) Theresa May probably received some face to face nod from other EU leaders that there could be further assurances on the backstop, but nothing in writing. So when 2018 ended no meetings were envisaged, and nothing political or legal formally promised
3) There were phone calls in early New Year (May taling to Tusk, Juncker, Rutte etc) and official level contacts, but nothing of real substance appears to have emerged (there may also have been phone calls between @simoncoveney and David Lidington)

Commission: Today's package includes 14 measures in a limited number of areas where a "no-deal" scenario would create major disruption for citizens and businesses in the EU27. These areas include financial services, air transport, customs, and climate policy, amongst others.
“These measures will not – and cannot – mitigate the overall impact of a "no-deal" scenario, nor do they in any way compensate for the lack of stakeholder preparedness or replicate the full benefits of EU membership or the terms of any transition period, as provided for in the WA
“They are limited to specific areas where it is absolutely necessary to protect the vital interests of the EU and where preparedness measures on their own are not sufficient”

The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said he was "very satisfied" with the EU's position on the Irish backstop at last night's summit meeting.
"We as the EU stand by the Withdrawal Agreement that was negotiated, we don't believe it's up for renegotiation, we're very keen to begin, as soon as it's ratified, talks on the future relationship, because we want to have a close relationship with the United Kingdom,"

1) to upskill we need to hire externally vs. train internally

A student was struggling in my class and scheduled a meeting with me to see if there was any hope.
Her exam scores were quite low and she was quite frustrated.
"I've been working really hard trying to learn the material, but it just doesn't stick."

She then showed me mounds of her notes and looked up at me in despair. "It just doesn't stick and I'm so frustrated because I've taken the class before and was doing well but I had to stop going when I had my surgery."
I asked about her surgery.
3: "Remember (in class) when you were talking about the woman who didn't feel afraid because she didn't have amygdalas? I raised my hand and asked, 'What about only having one amygdala, would you be able to feel afraid?'" I remembered. "That was me..."

1/ Hugh starts off with the EU's rejection of HMG's current ideas on option A (a new Customs partnership) which he describes as a "Whitehall pipe-dream". I think an arrangement like the current customs union could be found, but I suspect that is not at all what Hugh would like...
2/...since he seems to be upset that the EU has also so far rejected HMG's ideas on option B, the infamous technology-based solution (alongside trusted trader schemes etc.), the panacea solution for all who want a "hard Brexit" outside the EU's CU and SM rules.
