Alright let’s REALLY GET COOKIN’

BREAKIN’

BACKS, THAT IS
I remember being twelve and reading these panels for the first time and getting a chill up my spine. Batman wasn’t supposed to get tired!
Knightfall KEEPS trying to make Bane’s stupid gang into a Thing and they’re just so boring. The only one of them who has a defined thing is Bird and he just... has a trained bird. The story would be stronger without them but then Bane would have no one to monologue to, I guess.
Breyfogle is so good at this fight scene thing where every action the heroes are doing in a panel looks like it flows from the last one, like they never stop moving. It’s absolutely a primary influence on how I imagine that Batman fights.
Man that SUNBURST background

that SKOPP

💋👌
Breyfogle’ s Zsasz is still the definitive Zsasz.
Hi, I will never ever ever be tired of this Batfamily joke.

Remember kids, if you’re infiltrating a hostage situation, make sure to communicate with your partner beforehand.
Me: Oooh, the Croc/Bane fight on the tiny ledge above the Gotham sewers, I remember really liking this scene when I was a kid
Me: ...this scene is full of bondage!Robin’s gams and butt
World’s Greatest Detective not above using the Shower Too Loud excuse to escape reasonable advice
This, this was the moment that Bane was enshrined in 12-year old me’s list of the greatest Batman villains, where he remains to this day.

He can tell from the way Bruce Wayne WALKS that he’s Batman.
“Fuck Batman.”
Where with most villains their gimmick is “sports” or “birds” or “plants” but the Riddlers is “merciless self-sabotage” and, like, first

MOOD

And second

This is why I genuinely find him compelling
At SDCC Tom King says Batman uses Sanctuary’s holograms to spend time with his boys when they were young, before he knew them, before they experienced trauma — and if he ever shows that in an issue of Heroes in Crisis it will probably kill me.
*slamming fist on table with every word* THAT’S. MY. GUY.
OK let’s do this.

The main event.
I can’t even crop this one, it’s too good. After knowing for weeks that Bane is toying with him, this is the first moment Batman actually meets him. Final page in the issue.
👏🏼Doug 👏🏼Moench’s 👏🏼dialogue
Is this the first time someone smashed Jason’s costume case for dramatic effect, I wonder?
Final page of the next issue.

Jim Aparo is one of my primary “mental image of Batman” artists, and I’d always chalked that up to A Death In the Family. But I forgot that he drew the entire fight where Bane snaps Bruce’s back, as well.
Oh man, the back of this trade has a quick 6-page story from Chuck Dixon and Eduardo Barreto about how Bane got into the manor and it has my favorite: Alfred politely cornering an intruder with a shotgun.
