I'm finally reading @daverich1's newly updated The Left's Jewish Problem (…). It's excellent. Meticulous and measured, and thought provoking
One thing which I kind of knew but didn't properly understand was how much of the dispute over antisemitism goes back to 1970s/80s student politics. Literally many of the same people resurrecting old rivalries. No wonder it's so bitter except the stakes are higher now
It's like the entire country has been imprisoned at a 1980s university campus debate and George Galloway is moderating
I read each of the first seven chapters patting myself on the back for never getting involved in student politics. Sorry student politicians! You're great really.
When I say the same people - it really is the same people. John Mann, Galloway, @DAaronovitch, @SCynic1, Andrew Murray, Trevor Phillips, Tony Greenstein...
Chapter 5 on the Corbyn/Stop the War/Islamist coalition is fascinating too. Have read about it before it but it really is interesting in terms of what I was tweeting about Corbyn's approach to human rights
In terms of realist politics, the anti-war left/Islamist alliance really is quite something
I mean, I know your enemy's enemy is your friend and all that... but
We must never forget what an world-leading troll George Galloway is
Take a bow Press TV...
Another thing which comes clear from Rich's book is how central the idea that the Nazis supported Zionism is to the narrative which equates Zionism *to* Naziism, common since Soviet years and popularised in the 1970s. It's a 'tell' - see Ken, the Jewdas antisemitism training etc.
It's not just a wilful misreading of history (because the Nazis didn't support Jews' rights to self-determination, they wanted to eradicate Jews from Germany and eventually replaced forced relocation with murder as policy) it's central to the narrative…
You really have to understand that to understand what was going on in this meeting…
