1-You might be wondering what I am doing here on New Year's Eve AND on my husband's birthday.
Truth is, we were celebrating a lot yesterday. in fact, we have been celebrating a lot for the last week or so, so today we are pretty hangover.
We went to bed around 5am last night

We're gonna talk about revising a novel! We're gonna talk about technique! We're gonna talk about murderboards! We're gonna THREAD.
Let's start from first principles:
1. Novels are huge and messy and broken. Period. No one has ever written a perfect novel, even after revision. Perfection is for poems and short stories.

2. You can't hold a whole novel in your head all at once.
Drafting was the arty part. Drafting was where you get to have tantrums and be a weirdo and dance in the middle of the grocery store like you're Florence from Florence + the Machine

Revising can be a science. Thus, WE MURDERBOARD.

I'm taking a class this term in #ReproductiveJustice and I have got to say, it's really eye opening how narrowly we look at it as a society. Almost all of the focus is on abortion (currently the hot button issue in #Oregon) but there is so SO much more to it!
From my own personal experience as an advocate for #ReproRights this course has forced me to step back and come to terms with how "white" my views have been and how even when focusing on access to reproductive options, it's been a focus on white middle class women. 2/n
Even during times when the focus was on people of color, the solutions that were given used white cis women as the standard. When talking about poverty, it was the poverty of white cis women. Access? Same thing. People of color were often an afterthought. 3/n

Wasn't long ago that conflating political policy with the extermination of millions of Jews was relegated to the darkest corners of the conversation, either ignored or met with legitimate condemnation by the reasoned minds occupying the remaining space.
Judging from our current "national conversation," invoking Nazism is now a mainstream argument, lurking just under the surface of an otherwise principled discussion during a cable news hit, or an evocative twitter thread.
The layers of civility one had to burn through to get to "This looks like Nazi Germany" have been reduced to one - if what the other side is arguing seems mean-spirited on the surface, this looks like Nazi Germany. Invoking Hitler has been reduced to a surface scratch.

1/ If there is one "thinking tool" everyone should have in their mental toolbox it is First Principles Thinking. It is the backbone of creativity and innovation, and a surefire way to think for yourself.
2/ A first principle is a basic assumption that cannot be deduced any further. Aristotle called it “the first basis from which a thing is known."
3/ First principles thinking is the act of boiling a situation down to the fundamental parts that you know are true and building up from there.
