Going through the suspected bomber's apparent Twitter account, there are just hundreds of explicit, direct threats directed at politicians and journalists. The world be very different if Twitter and the government took these types of threats at all seriously.
Much of the account's content, like posting the same image attacking Parkland survivor David Hogg hundreds of times, can't help but raise questions about mental illness and the role social media played in exacerbating it.
It's far from definitive, but there is some research on this. The name, "Twitter Psychosis" is less than ideal, but the thesis here is worth considering. washingtonpost.com/news/the-inter…
There's a tweet from this account that contains a picture of Joe Biden's house with a target on it and also pictures of explosions. Even if this account isn't the work of someone who sent a mail bomb to Biden, it's insane this is considered normal on Twitter.
The account, of course, also targeted a number of female writers with direct threats that don't seem at all out of line with the type of harassment female writers deal with online all the time.
But seriously: what would the world look like if, every time someone made a death threat on Twitter, the police showed up at their door? I honestly have no idea! That world could honestly look much worse than the one we're in right now, but it's worth thinking hard about.
The account is also just packed with easily disprovable conspiracy theories and obvious photoshops clearly posted as being factual.
Even if this account had no connection to any bombings, it's a sad commentary on how the internet's ability to distribute content has outpaced our ability to understand and contextualize that content.
There are tens of millions of social media accounts across the globe just like this one and every single one is a tragedy.
I just cannot get over the idea that probably every single person reading this tweet right now personally knows someone IRL who has, at some point, posted a threatening social media message about one of the people or institutions who were sent bombs in the past few days.
