This gets it wrong in an important way, because we have a very viable set of alternatives to both unbridled free speech and unfettered censorship. We call them institutions, norms, and socialization, and together they can check the elements of bad speech that good speech cannot.
When they’re not your particular cup of tea, you call them political correctness. When you approve, they’re civility. And when they’re so natural to you that they disappear all together, you call them culture.
By any name, they do not reflect a particularly strong faith in the ability of good speech to overcome bad speech. And I got to say, based on...well, human history, that cynicism is not entirely misplaced.
