Partisans will try to “defend” their abusive government by claiming we are ignoring their enemy abuser (often guilty of same abuses as their own!), which is never true. Or they will claim we are receiving funding from their enemy government, also never true.
We also get the bean-counters, traditionally the defenders of Israeli abuses who complain we focus “too much” on their government. Most recently this comes from defenders of Saudi government. Any criticism is too much, of course. And their real goal is to deflect attention.
Typically there is an increase in our reporting and coverage when we issue a major report; at other times it will be tied to a breaking news event. Of course we want to take advantage of keyed up attention to a country’s abuses. Our goal is impact, wherever possible.
More personally, I think our best strategy is to focus as much as possible where we can have most impact. That’s where I try to focus my own tweets. Because we don’t have armies. We only have the influence of words, truth and human rights values.
