This woman is 62 years old. She’s from Honduras but lived in Atlanta for 13 years. She worked in landscaping for all of those years. Life was good in Atlanta but last year she received a devastating call.

Her only daughter had been murdered.

She decided she had to go home to bury her daughter. She knew leaving ATL meant she wouldn’t be able to come back. But the American Dream meant little to her now. All she cared about was being close to her daughter’s grave.

Her first death threat was the day of the funeral.
One night the gangsters broke into her home.They forced her out.They stole her home.

She couldn’t go to the police. They didn’t care because gangs steal houses ALL THE TIME.

If she wanted to live, she had to leave.

She’s on the caravan by herself.

The basic storyline is a mother decides to take her children on a perilous + life endangering journey in order to give her kids a better future in a distant unknown sanctuary.

Before the family embarks on their journey, home for this family is dangerous.
Their lives are at risk everyday. They barely have any food. They don’t know how they are going to survive. So they do the only thing can do, they leave.

The journey is horrible. They almost die several times. They are cold, scared + attacked by crazy people.

I was told there was a young boy who had down syndrome whose mother was very sick.

I immediately went looking for them. I found Ana in her tent under a mound of blankets. I asked if anyone knew where her son was but everyone pointed me in conflicting directions.
Just then the mother began to stir. She sat up and asked if I could help her. She told me she felt very sick. She had spent the day in various offices getting her paperwork in order for her asylum case. As soon as she got back to the shelter she got sick.
She asked if I had seen her boy. He was looking for food because they hadn’t eaten all day.

Suddenly, Jorge appeared from around the corner. At fifteen years old he’s a bubble of happiness and sweetness. Just as he arrived his mother stuck her head out of the tent and threw up.

A typical immigrant story. We left behind all of our family to start a new life in the USA.

Our story stops being typical the morning my father told my mom he was going to work and he never came back. My father abandoned us with no money, no family, no education + no English.
My mom did what millions of mothers have done before her, she made miracles happen every day. She found food when there was none, she found a home on a park bench when we got kicked out of our apartment, she made the darkest moments of our lives exude love and hope.

(2) These are the children of migrants who went to the border unaccompanied in the last year, many seeking asylum. They were placed in sponsor homes by the Department of Health and Human Services.

Since 2013, 180,000 children have crossed the border unaccompanied.
(3) In 2016, an AP investigation found that more than two dozen of these children had been sent to homes where they were sexually assaulted, starved, and forced to work.

Unlike foster homes, these sponsors didn't go through background checks or have regular home visits.

1/ First, the basics: The Logan Act (18 U.S. Code § 953: Private Correspondence with Foreign Governments) is a federal criminal statute, and a very serious one. Violation of the statute is a felony, and those convicted of a violation can serve up to three years in federal prison.
2/ Republicans like to give the impression no one's even *thought* about this federal criminal statute since it was passed—incidentally, like *many* statutes—in the first few decades of the nation's existence.

But that's false—it was last amended during the Clinton presidency.
