I spent today in El Paso reporting from the border, where hundreds of migrants (many of them children), are being detained under a bridge, behind razor wire and fence, in conditions reminiscent of a low-budget zoo, and I think it’s important to share a few things I saw and heard
I know that news of this didn’t make the rounds until earlier this week, but it has been happening for about a month (per CBP). And the families aren’t just being detained here for hours—many of them told me they had been there for days (several of them said 5 days)
I met people from Honduras, Guatemala, and Brazil. I met men, women and children. Lots of children. An 8 year old, a four year old, a five month old. Everyone was wrapped in the same foil you’ve seen elsewhere. It’s what they use to keep warm

Lots of thoughts running through my head today, the 2nd anniversary of the #MuslimBan .

My daughter who asked me "Why does he hate Muslims?" on seeing the future President call to shut down Muslim immigration. She dismissed him: 'He doesn't need to be part of the conversation.'
I remember the heroes that showed up at Dulles and beyond. The ones who didn't have relatives or clients who'd be impacted by banishment from our country, but showed up anyway. The man who yelled "Welcome to America!" to everyone who walked through the int'l arrival doors.
The chants welcoming refugees. The multilingual signs, the law firm that grew organically out of the arrivals hall. And my colleagues who dropped everything to rush to Dulles. We did better than "access to counsel:" we brought counsel to those who needed it, when they needed it.

Some of you probably heard about a kid named Yummy from the South Side who passed away in 1994, most of you don’t.
More frequently I see things on here, people saying things like “Those kids that live in the hood choose to be criminals why can’t they just go to school, get an education, then get a job like normal people” They CAN’T
Most of these children were born into very terrible circumstances and their only way to survive is to do acts out of the ordinary just to enjoy the simple luxuries that some of us have, like getting a decent meal or having decent clothes to wear.
