A report from Mexico City’s Palillo Stadium where thousands of migrants from the caravan have arrived and thousands more are expected - tired doesn’t even begin to describe it #CaravanaMigrante #MigrantCaravan
Three massive tents have been set up by Mexican authorities for people to sleep in like 4yo Ian - the tents are now full though, and many more people are expected in the coming hours #CaravanaMigrante
People are now pouring out of the tents and sleeping on the open air bleachers which are nearly full as well...and people continue to arrive - most from Honduras who say they’ve been traveling for about a month now #CaravanaMigrante
Boy oh boy, thank goodness for jungle gyms... #MigrantCaravan
Another group arrives - this time mostly young men and boys, almost traveling by themselves...the stadium has enough to feed 4,000 at the moment and they’ve already fed over 3,000 people food #migrantcaravan
All of Mexico City is w/out water at the moment. Water is being delivered via truck and piped into containers like these as people eagerly rush to shower. For many, it’s been weeks since their last shower. This morning the stadium had 1k ppl - now it has at least 3k ppl inside
These children - the bravest humans I’ve ever met. When I asked this 11 yo if he was tired or hungry or wanted to stop walking he just shrugged and said, “no, it’s ok, I’m ok, I’m with my family and I’m ok.” He will be sleeping outside tonight w/ his family b/c tents are full.
This is Edith and her 4yo son Josue. When I asked her how her journey has been, she began to cry. “We’ve walked, held onto the top of trucks, hitched rides...” Edith says she will try 2 seek asylum in Mexico but is willing to walk to the US for a better future. #MigrantCaravan
I used to hate clowns. I don’t anymore. #migrantcaravan #CaravanaMigrante
I asked the President of the Human Rights Commission of Mexico City how long these migrants would be allowed to stay in the stadium. She said for as long as they need + in the next few days they’d be informing migrants their options if they want to stay in MX or go to the U.S.
Inside one of the three tents set up at the stadium - migrants get mats they can put on the floor and most fall right to sleep - for many it’s the first covered shelter they’ve had in weeks - but the tents are full and there are many more coming #MigrantCaravan #CaravanaMigrante
Makeshift shelters being constructed out of plastic bags old rugs anything they can find to keep the cold from getting to them tonight on the open-air bleachers at the stadium
