Seems a good day to post this article about 7 East End Jewish siblings (including my maternal grandfather FJ) who "did their bit" in WW2. All survived the war but many of their friends did not #RemembranceDay2018
/ I have another article along same lines. I guess they wanted to publicise they were doing their bit like everyone else, in the context of some non-British born Jews being put in internment camps and many (including this family) coming from East End poverty, keen to integrate
/ Here's an amazing bit of history which I have from a school project I did about 'my grandpa's war' when I was 12. I have the original photo which is better quality. It shows a military funeral for 2 RAF crews killed in a terrible crash - with clergy from 5 different religions
/ This is the text from the project explaining the incident
/ Here is an exert from a letter. It was to my grandpa from a friend telling him that a good mutual friend (a flight navigator called Dave Castle) had died, right at the end of the war. "I feel he can never be replaced" #RemembranceDay2018
/ All 4 of my grandparents served in WW2, doing their bit. How lucky I feel that they survived and we as a country prevailed. As I read about 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht, it brought home that if we had lost WW2, my family would almost certainly have been murdered the Nazis
/ So, whilst I am not 'pro-war', neither am I a pacifist. Sometimes wars must be fought. We must remember the fallen, use their sacrifices as a lesson that war must only be joined where there is truly no other option, and work tirelessly to build a world where war is unnecessary
