The Spectator, a magazine which has printed articles defending Greek neo-Nazis and entitled 'In Defence of the Wehrmacht', has published a defence of Macron's abandoned honouring of the French Nazi collaborator Petain, who sent Jews to the gas chambers. 
Petain was an enthusiastic Nazi collaborator who introduced anti-Jewish laws without the Germans even asking, and personally intervened to make those laws harsher. Is that mentioned by The Spectator? No. Petain's regime sent 77,000 Jews to Nazi camps. theguardian.com/world/2010/oct…
There is not one mention of Jews in The Spectator article on Petain. Erasing any mention of his enthusiastic persecution and complicity in the Holocaust - in order to justify honouring him - is revolting historic revisionism.
Petain is not somebody who regretfully backed the destruction of the Third Republic. He opposed the Republic, and the authoritarian right-wing regime he set up accorded with what he actually thought.
The Spectator asks us if we can separate the Petain of World War I from the Petain of 1940. If you collaborate with Nazis, set up a right-wing dictatorship and round up Jews to be murdered, that's what you should be remembered for above all else, and no you shouldn't be honoured.
That this is a controversial statement in 2018 is frightening. With the far right on the rise, and legitimised by the mainstream media, there will be more of this historical revisionism - and it must be fought.
