Have been very busy of late. But now I have the time to do a thread about poverty. Uncle @segalink and uncle @AbdulMahmud01 have been talking about weaponised poverty but there is one part of the weaponisation they don't talk of.
It's not intentional on their part I assure you. It's just that we have become socially conditioned to see an anomaly as normal. I'm talking about retirement in Nigeria.
Retirement in Nigeria is the real weaponisation of poverty. It's heart breaking to see those who have given their youth to this country live in squalor.
In saner climes retirement is a period for exploration, travel, living it up. We have many Brits living in Portuguese villages now. Retired folks. We have small towns in Portugal where most speak English cos the towns are overrun with British pensioners
Here we have retirees use their gratuity to complete their houses. Heck a former Chief Justice of the Federation once said he couldn't afford a house on his salary. Man gave us facts and figures; full breakdown. We cheered his incorruptibility
Not knowing he was showing us the reason for the corruption. He was showing us the tumor in our innards.
In Nigeria we have the working retired. A person retires from a 9-5 whether govt or private sector then starts a business a few months later because just as salaries were inadequate pensions are also inadequate.
Until we address these more people will run to Canada, our healthcare and educational institutions have collapsed. The security infrastructure is collapsing too.
This is a country where the starting salary for graduates in the federal ministries is less than 40k monthly. And you expect said individual not to be corrupt when a senator earns more than 300 times that per month?
We need to wake up and smell the bacon. The weaponisation of poverty i lies not in the lack of jobs but in the working poor. In a system that makes decent wages a privilege and not a right.
Go in peace....... Mass is ended
