ACOSTA Update: Following the ct's decision last week, CNN and WHCA say they offered to help WH establish reporter protocols. The WH didn't respond but after 9pm Friday, Sarah Sanders sent a letter saying they'd made the "preliminary decision" to suspend Acosta's hard pass.

They asked for a response by 5pm Sunday, set a deadline of 3pm Monday to determine whether the "preliminary decision" is finalized. Now CNN is asking the court to order the WH to file their opposition to their motion for a prelim injunction no later than Tuesday.

Response by CNN would be due Nov 27 or earlier.

Update on Bijan Kian: Citing a significant amount of evidence to obtain from foreign countries, defense attys asked to delay trial date until September. Judge Trenga denied the request for now, saying defense must first file a motion outlining...

why they need until September & what foreign evidence they may need to require. He also told them to work "realistically but diligently" to meet the speedy trial date which is currently set for Feb 11.

For now, Trenga has asked that defense attorneys file any motion to continue by Jan 21. A hearing on that motion will be held Feb 7.

Good morning from inside the media room at the USDC Eastern District of Virginia. Bijan Kian's status conference with Judge Trenga gets underway this morning at 10AM. Story to come @CourthouseNews. Trial set for Feb, so today I'm expecting negotiating around docs/schedule etc.
Friendly reminder for those new to USDC EDVA coverage - while there is a media room, there isn't a closed circuit TV feeding the activity in the courtroom down to reporters. That means I can only update once out of the courtroom. Stay tuned.

House Dems released their rules package last night. Vote goes down this week. Here's a taste of whats inside as House Dems push for a return to "regular order":
- Bills that go thru the Rules committee must have a hearing and markup session before going to floor

- All major bill text must be available 72 hours before it can be voted on
- Training will be extended for congressional staff on how to handle whistleblowers

- State in rules that any member who has been indicted should resign
- Amend House rules to "unequivocally" ban sex/gender discrimination

Last month, I reported on a meeting at DHS in August, 2017, in which Administration officials advocated for family separation to deter migrants, including asylum seekers, from Central America. Guess what was also on the agenda in that meeting? 1/
Ending the Flores Agreement, which mandated that the government meet minimum requirements for how to treat immigrant kids in government custody. 2/
Since the late 1990s, the terms of Flores got shored up and strengthened, through a 2008 law and subsequent direction from the courts. To those in the Admin who advocate separation of families, putting an end to these protections was a priority, too. Why? 3/
