today someone said that the minimal toolbox has WD-40, a vise grip, and a roll of duct tape. ever since i've been pondering the minimal software debugger's toolset and here's my go:

1) printf() or equiv
2) strace
3) tcpdump
i wavered on gdb, but came down hard on the side of "it's cheating".

also feels cheaty: sar, nmon, htop, a bunch of those newfangled "wrapper" thingies.

useful but nonessential: nm, ctags, objdump, od, xxd, objcopy, strings, ar, dlltool, ltrace, ldd ...

anyone wanna fight me?
as this extremely dignified and gentlemanly and not at all sexist site points out, you can use vise grip pliers as "pliers, a pipe wrench, an adjustable wrench, wire cutters, a ratchet, or a clamp". or a hammer, in a pinch.

see? just like strace. artofmanliness.com/articles/12-es…
... someone has been squatting on artofwomanliness.com since 1985. there goes my thanksgiving holiday plans (that I dreamed up five minutes ago) so i hope you're happy out there, you vile old squatter. 😔
ok apparently I haven't checked Twitter in 3-4 days so I am very much enjoying all the responses. Notes:

* you can only pick 3 tools
* lsof, ngrep, mosh -- strong contenders
* oprofile, pmp, stap, sysdig, bpf -- not really utilities imo
* vmstat, iostat -- you wasted a pick
