this is uncanny since i was JUST WRITING a tweet on questions you should ask when interviewing:

- is there a career ladder? comp bands?
- do managers and engineers get compensated equally by level?
- do you encourage people to move back and forth between IC/mgmt?

- how long does it take someone to reach senior engineer out of school?
- is there a terminal level for engineers?
- what is the distribution of engineers over levels? how many principals?
- what are the technical expectations for managers?
- what is the process for changing managers or switching teams?

- are engineers expected to understand the business value of their work?
- if i don't want to work on a project, do i have to? or /when/ do i have to?
- do engineers participate in defining expectations for each level? how often are they revised?
- what is the full process for getting promoted?
- are hires made by consensus, or can anyone veto for any reason?
- if two teams disagree about a choice of tool, what happens?
- what does it mean to be a senior eng at your company?
- how do you calibrate glue work vs writing code?
- do you offer leadership coaching or other development?
- how do you support new managers/other career changes?
- what are the leadership opportunities for senior engineers?

The single *stupidest* VC trend of the past few years -- and yeah, I know, low bar -- has got to be AIOps.

Let's get specific.
There are some current success stories that blend some clever automation and a lot of NLP and call themselves "AIOPS" to get more money and (possibly) customers.

More power to them.
And I am not an AI expert. I am very far from such. I am but a humble ops engineer in the field, surveying the results.

Someday the machines *will* take over. But right now, AIOPS is stumped by change and ridden with false positives. It makes everything harder, not better.

... Oops, got interrupted. What I was going to say is: a truly good manager will be honest with you and tell you when it's probably time for you to leave for your own sake.

Even if they desperately would like you to stay.
This is somewhat controversial, and I accept that. I'm not sure how right I am. But.

A tech lead's ultimate priority is the success of the tech. A people manager's ultimate loyalty is to the growth and development of the people on their team.

I got a couple of DM's asking me about character development and writing. I have a little time this fine morning. I'll put together a small #writing thread.

So, character development. It's just my approach. YMMV, but here's my path...
Character isn't built in backstory or aesthetic details. Backstory is there to help the writer, but the character development comes form CHOICES and CONSEQUENCES. The more a character makes CHOICES, the more the audience/reader will learn about them.
We understand someone's nature by how the react to things. We assess them based on the choices they make, and those choices, ideally, shouldn't be easy.

Here's a guaranteed way for #Writing Contest Jurors to ruin an #emergingwriter's day: tweet to your followers (some of whom have to be thinking of entering the contest you're judging) that you're not a fan of certain kinds of stories, so maybe it's best if they "skip this one..."
...bc being an #emergingwriter isn't hard enough. It isn't hard enough that there already is a magical/frustrating subjectiveness and unpredictability to contests, and that entering one is an act of #faith, yet maybe your surprising story will be the one to enchant the jurors...
...nor is it a challenge to come up with the contest fee, which is usually significant, because you think your story's great and might have a shot, even though it's got #scifi or #specfic elements, because you've been inspired in the past by unexpected and genre-bending work...

Get a portfolio said the writing panel/advice/speaker in what is the latest throwaway simple advice that instantly builds a career…. So, let’s talk about them.
1/24
1)Portfolios are NOT magic. Simply having one doesn't get you a job. Tey are a tool to be used in chasing work and an increasing number of employers ask for them. Having one can be very useful, but just putting some bits of writing in the same place does not = instant career.
2) People tend to read your email first, then your c.v. and then portfolio. Mess up stages 1, or 2 and 3 may well not matter. Always rework your email, c.v. and portfolio for EVERY application. Focus on what matches that job/company.
