@NickCrosby @KeohaneDan @CharlesTannock @Anna_Soubry @JustineGreening I'm interested in there being a stable relationship between the UK and EU that's based on what each side can bear. At the moment what UK and EU want to do is too far apart. This might probably change over time, though who knows how long it will take. 1/
@NickCrosby @KeohaneDan @CharlesTannock @Anna_Soubry @JustineGreening 2/ May's deal doesn't shut off EEA from which reentry is not too difficult if the UK wants to actually join properly. But the half-in half-out status has been shown to be unstable because it reinforces British exceptionalism at every moment of decision.
@NickCrosby @KeohaneDan @CharlesTannock @Anna_Soubry @JustineGreening 3/ And while the UK as it's been known since about 1921 will find it difficult to be stable either, there's no law of history that says it has to stay as it is any more than that it needs to be in the EU.
@NickCrosby @KeohaneDan @CharlesTannock @Anna_Soubry @JustineGreening 4/ What is needed for a society is to have arrangements that suit the society and work in its members' long term interests. The spirit of conservatism should be to make the former do the latter. Political power can of course affect both the arrangement and the society
@NickCrosby @KeohaneDan @CharlesTannock @Anna_Soubry @JustineGreening 5/ It doesn't rule out radical change but should try and go with the grain of society. The ref split the country so badly it has two grains, running in opposite directions. I'm afraid I don't think another referendum will make anything better.
