No Brexitation Without Representation. Thread.

bestforbritain.org/right-to-vote
2. I'm against a second referendum and support Nick Boles's Norway+ proposals. But this is genuinely new and deserves serious consideration.
3. It makes a serious argument about why the first referendum was wrong (not a few dubious claims about Facebook ads) but a proper, principled democratic argument
4. This is that 3 million people - indeed the 3 million most affected by Brexit - were denied the right to vote on perhaps the biggest single decision of their lives.
5. The founding principle of British parliamentary democracy is that laws should be made by the representatives of the people who live under them.
6. This wasn't founded on "national identity" - the concept hadn't really been articulated then - and the British were happy to have Dutch and German kings rule over them long after it was established.
7. If there has to be direct democracy in Britain, it should follow the same
principle.
8. The 2016 franchise was partly there. Commonwealth citizens resident in the UK, though usually not EU nationals, were allowed to vote. And that's as it should be the politics of the UK affects them.
9. It follows that the 2016 referendum wasn't based on a national franchise, so anyone suggesting that EU citizens in Britain shouldn't be able to vote in a new the referendum because they're not British undermines the legitimacy of the last one.
10. It also makes a fundamental point about what Britain's membership of the EU would be: one of many partners in a union of equals, not a special deal for a special country.
11. Whereas the @peoplesvote_uk Campaign attacks Norway+ because it involves freedom of movement and operates under its eminence grise Tony Blair who wants to somehow restrict EU immigration from the inside.
12. Unlike Blair's invidious pitch: "let us stay in as long as we can keep you out", a referendum won with all EU and expat Brits voting would be a sincere rejection of Brexit and it's xenophobia.
13. Finally @BestForBritain if you succeed, you should expand your name for the campaign itself. Call yourselves Europe Best for Britain. ENDS
