The Lincoln Memorial in Washington was unveiled on 30 May 1922.
Take a closer look. What do you see?
The columns he's resting his hands on. What are they?
A bundle of rods bound together by a leather thong.
An ancient Roman symbol of power and authority.
In Italy, just as the the Lincoln memorial is being unveiled, the same symbol is being used by a new political movement.
The latin name for the bundle is fascis. The political party that took power in Italy in 1922 was the Partito Nazionale Fascista.
The symbolic fascis are a recurring feature of the monument.
In fact the monument itself could even be an architectural representation of the fascis.
