In other words, those calling for an end to “Grievance Studies” and its journals, who argue that certain po-mo articles are so lacking in quality that they should never have been published in the first place, are engaging in a kind of deplatforming?
This is exactly how rightwing threats to academic freedom manifest.
More seriously, if any other precinct of the academy were subject to the kind of abuse and snickering calls for defunding that critical race/gender studies has, it would immediately be labeled an attack on academic freedom. Rightly or wrongly is besides the fact.
What matters is that rightwing and anti-Left academics have so completely monopolized the language of academic freedom that it never occurs to them that they might be the guilty party. That’s just not how the game is supposed to work!
