Everyone now going off at @GeorgeMonbiot about the Attenborough article have all missed the exact point he was trying to make and it's bloody annoying. The issue is that DA has a huge mainstream platform (TV series) in which he could highlight our environmental crisis... (1/3)
...but doesn't. It's great that he can make a speech to the UN about it, really, but the issue needs to be brought in to the living rooms of the masses of viewers watching his nature programs. What percentage of his show's viewers will see that he spoke at the UN meeting... (2/3)
..and actually *really* care. This issue isn't just one for the UN 'experts', it's one for *everyone*, and where better to discuss it than on his nature documentary. I think that's his point, and a lot of people are confusing their love of a personality for a hard truth. (3/3)
As an afterthought, it seems as though a lot of people don't think we should question and criticise our heroes. Yes, DA has done some amazing things, but that doesn't make him exempt from thoughtful criticism.
Should also state that I'm not trying to personally attack DA, in reality the argument is about more than one man. It's about a political landscape that treats our environment as a political issue, and a media that doesn't acknowledge it as much as it should.
