$40 million and counting.

That's how much American taxpayers have paid in the last decade for Confederate monuments and other shrines to a racist ideology.

This is all "history" glorified supposedly for the public's good.

And it's not just the money. The article documents shameful, intentional acts of pro-Confederate and pro-slavery misinformation carried out by state employees and publicly subsidized private sites in Alabama, Mississippi, my home state of Georgia, and other states.
"“Monuments to the ‘lost cause’ will prove monuments of folly...in the memories of a wicked rebellion which they must necessarily perpetuate...It is a needless record of stupidity and wrong.”

Frederick Douglass, 1870
"In 1931, W.E.B. Du Bois criticized even simple statues erected to honor Confederate leaders. “The plain truth of the matter,” Du Bois wrote, “would be an inscription something like this: ‘sacred to the memory of those who fought to Perpetuate Human Slavery.’”
Important reminders of African Americans who protested against Confederate monuments back when they were first being erected in the late 19th century. @kerryt3334, weren't you telling me about a Black streetcar operator in Charleston ~1900 who mowed down a Confederate statue?
Much respect to the all-around excellent investigative reporting and historical analysis by @bxpnyc and @SethFW.
