1. 40% of these top conservative podcasts are described as being about liberals. That seems notable. Like if the top 40% of Ohio State Football podcasts were largely about Michigan. Or if 40% of leading Country music podcasts were about hip-hop. townhall.com/tipsheet/townh…
2. Here are the 8 out of 20 that fit the description above.
3. The next group.
4. Two really notable exclusions, IMHO, are the @Jamie_Weinstein show sponsored by @NRO and @SykesCharlie podcast hosted (perhaps formerly?) by the Weekly Standard.
5. As someone who does not identify as a conservative but knows a decent amount about that political tradition's history, I find much to admire (and much that is infuriating, as it should be) in the conversations hosted by Weinstein and Sykes.
6. What I most admire is their willingness to take the arguments, evidence, and perspectives of their political opponents into genuine consideration when articulating their own positions. They *usually* try to avoid arguing against straw-figure caricatures.
7. In any political coalition, there will always be a place for conversations that take the form of "man, do our opponents really suck, and let me tell you how." But when that form of oppositional identity formation becomes so central to a movement, it's not a good sign.
8. Like, if you've gotta make the case for Country Music by spending 40% of your energy explaining why hip hop sucks, or ginning up excitement for Ohio State football by hating on Michigan...then the product you're hyping is probably not so exciting on its own terms.
9. For a contrast, check out this list of 25 podcasts aimed at liberals. The words "conservative" or "republican" do not appear in these descriptions. By my count, 25% mention Trump, but most in a rhetorically calm way. And Trump is President, after all. salon.com/2017/11/05/bes…
10. Also note that this Salon list includes 2 podcasts of the more libertarian variety that most progressives I know would classify as "not left," Joe Rogan and Dave Rubin.
