Glad to see this getting some attention. You'd be hard pressed to find a more blatant attack by a government on free speech, and with a university angle to boot!

As has Texas, which resulted in multiple invited speakers being required to state in their contracts that they rejected BDS before being permitted to speak on campus or receive reimbursements.

Sometimes it seems insane to me that this isn't Topic #1 for campus free speech activists. A comedian is asked to sign a contract promising to honor leftwing shibboleths and the world goes bananas. Surely this, which has the full force of state government behind it, is far worse.

I’d reframe this. One rarely asked, but quite legitimate, question is this: What do we owe to our allies? If structurally oppressed people are going to say that their allies have an obligation to defer to them (politically, epistemically, etc.), what is owed to them in return?
It’s a big thing, asking someone to entrust their energy and political judgment to you! I think Jade Schaff (Oberlin) wrote something about this, but can’t find it now. Anyway, it’s a legitimate issue that will not/should not go away.
To be clear: I don’t mean “what is owed” in the “what do we get in return?” sense. Rather, what obligation of care, of consideration, of caution does such a relationship create for the allied-with party?

Objection #1: What about Trump/Orban/Brexit/Bolsonaro?

What about them? Yascha knows better than anyone that the illiberal/authoritarian turn in consolidated democracies long precedes contemporary SJW activism. See Brownlee 2002, Wright 2008, Levitsky and Murillo 2013.
As for populism in Europe and the United States, that too predates any kind of social justice activism. In fact, its rise is probably due much more to neoliberal failures (e.g. austerity) than left-liberal ones.

Reading this @JohnHMcWhorter piece is an exercise in vertigo. The central claim is that "third wave anti-racism" (i.e. the broad nexus of PC, social justice, and ID politics) is doomed to failure. That the aims are good, but strategically it's a dead end.

This is a common view among centrist liberals and libertarians: "Yes, racism and sexism are serious problems and must be addressed, but the SJW Left is going about it all wrong. In fact, its tactics are actually making these problems worse, not better."

1/ The business role (non-technical) I’ve seen that has the greatest supply demand imbalance in my career is ecomm/digital “expert” for consumer companies in 2018. It is insane. Companies can’t find the talent to fill the roles.
2/ You’ll be hard pressed to find a CPG company that isn’t trying to find someone to help them with their “digital strategy”. Mostly they want help with both marketing (acquisition, content and brand) and online distribution (d2c and wholesale ecomm). A lot.
3/ As you might have guessed, part of the problem is that they lump both marketing and distribution together. Those are different things. Even though some consumer companies are just saying they need a “digital” expert, industry needs to advance and differentiate between the two

Judge Brett Kavanaugh's #SCOTUS hearings kick off this morning. Dems are furious at the number of docs being withheld re: his time in the White House under W. Bush. Republicans are defending the extent of disclosures. @chrisgeidner has been on it -->
The Kavanaugh hearing just got started and there's already chaos. Dems are interrupting Grassley as he starts to read his opening statement to protest the latest production of docs right before the hearing. Blumenthal is moving to adjourn. Grassley says they will proceed.
It began with Sen. Harris jumping in as soon as Grassley began, to say they had not been given the opportunity to review documents. Sen. Blumenthal pressed to adjourn. Now Sen. Booker is calling for time to debate the process.

At face value the claim about the party 'moving too far to the left' is just an obvious nonsense. You'd be hard-pressed to find a single policy position of this government that could credibly be called 'left' or even more left than Abbott's government was. (2/)
Fierravanti-Wells' statement only mentioned marriage equality, and she's since only mentioned that, energy policy, and 'religious freedom.' Turnbull only moved on *one* of these, and that was in a way dictated by the right of the party. (3/)
