Crash is a strong word, but there will definitely be a lot of fallout from people who thought it’s easier than it is.
We latch on to these overnight success indie maker stories when actually I think most of the successful folks have slogged it out for years before anything really clicked.
I get so many people asking me “how much are you making now?” from the 12 startup challenge. I’m just past month 3. I was prepared to not make a dime for years, but people are expecting me to be a millionaire already because of the hype machine around making.
Honestly it’s a damn confusing time to be a maker. There’s a contingent of folks who are selling the pick axes so it’s in their interest to tell you it’s easy and follow your dreams. Then there are real indie makers who are more skeptical because they’ve slogged it out.
That’s why I started my maker challenge with a realistic goal: practice execution again after years in “management” roles. If you become an indie maker with the goal of getting rich, you’re in for a struggle.
