I think this is precisely right. And in a related way, the outsize enthusiasm with which he's celebrated is *because* of his mediocrity. It models and exemplifies a pathway to success and celebrity for young people who otherwise fear for their own future and basic likeability.
To wax a little analytic, and borrowing an insight from a friend, it's not dissimilar to why so much pornography involves average or even unattractive men together w/ outrageously attractive (by, as it were, conventional standards) women: the men offer a screen for projection.
That these examples are all about tropes MALE desire and models FOR MEN is precisely the point. The Shapiro phenomenon is deeply gendered, it's a role model for a certain kind of insecure young man who, among other things, thinks sneering is the same thing as being smart.

a follower from abroad recently observed a very distinctively american disinterest in even the most meager historical accounts of the origins of various ideas, and I admit I have been thinking about this constantly ever since
why not just impose your own cursory prosthesis of origin on a concept like emotional labor? why acknowledge any of hundreds of books written about something like "neoliberalism" when you can just say it means nothing more than you're experience of being called names online?
the key tell in all these debates is that the defense people take is invariably a type of projective offense: it's not you, but the people who are trying to tell you about the origins or context for an idea who are the ones "making it mean whatever you want"

(quietly) the whole point is to make the concept of citizenship and the rights it confers ever more contested and precarious while also mobilizing ever greater animus and institutional brutality against ever expanding categories of dehumanized rightsless nonpersons
it amazes me how easily people lose sight of this basic and urgent threat in favor of dithering over, say, whether the latest, corrosive assault on the idea of people having basic rights is "serious" or just a "distraction"
in a way that was not the case literally days ago, the prospect of stripping born citizens of rights is now authorized as a speakable and worthy-of-consideration topic in US public life. the question of whether or not the POTUS can constitutionally effect this misses the point

So I want to talk about my own experience of depression. First of all, I want to state very clearly that I pose absolutely no risk to myself or others. I want to talk about it, because it helps me to do so. I hope this makes sense to anyone reading.
I think I recognised I was depressed in my teens. I am now 49. When I was 25 I went to my doctor and told him I thought I was depressed.
He didn't want to record anything about depression or mental health on my record because he said it could affect lots of things in my life. He wrote a prescription on his prescription pad for me, for sunshine and exercise.

1/Children & young people with autism and learning disabilities who could be living in the community with specialist support are languishing for years in Assessment & Treatment Units, some of them locked up 24/7 in isolation rooms, bec of severe financial pressure on Local Auths
2/ At the same time, private providers running these ATUs are raking in profits, being paid £452m per yr in what has become a market driven provision where autistic and LD people are little more than commodities
3/ This in spite of the fact that caring for them in the community would be far less expensive not to mention far better for the individuals concerned, their quality of life, their security and safety and their wellbeing
