I'm a few days late on this, but I live 10 miles from the border in the Big Bend and I spend a lot of time on both sides of the Río. In this thread, I'd like to share some photos I've captured of the beautiful people, landscape, and experience that would be jeopardized by a wall.
My wife, daughter and I joined a group of friends from Terlingua this week paddling canoes with Santa from Big Bend NP to Boquillas to hand out gifts to every child and a ham for every family. This is the 17th year of this tradition of spreading some cheer to our neighbors in MX
We ran out of hams before we had hit every house, but were able to get a donation to purchase more and deliver the next day, in spite of the crossing being closed because of the shutdown by you know who. It's still legal to give a gift to your neighbors.
The beautiful people of Boquillas in Coahuila have depended on visitors to the Big Bend since long before anyone thought we should build a wall.
From the South Rim of the Chisos Mountains, you can see way into Mexico and nothing but beauty. A border wall wouldn't just ruin this gorgeous view, it was also impact the large number of diverse species that have no concept of geopolitical borders.
When you look at this land you realize that trying to build a wall along this river would mean essentially cutting off that part of the US that stands between the wall and the river by making it inaccessible to US citizens as well.
Many US citizens make their living on the Río Grande, and many more get to enjoy its wild and scenic grandeur. A border wall would effectively put an end to all of that. I thought the wall guy was supposed to be creating jobs?
Anyone who has actually been to this part of the border knows that there already is a wall. On both sides. It's over 1000' tall, millions of years ahead of schedule, and didn't cost US taxpayers or Mexico a damn dime. You really gonna build a wall on top of that Donnie?
I mean, just look at this wall. It's yuge. No way any man made wall could be better. NO WAY.
Every year in May, people from Mexico and the US join in a "fiesta protesta" called Voices From Both Sides, with bands on either side taking turns entertaining everyone, and friends and neighbors joining hands in a circle in the middle of the Río in a show of solidarity. #vecinos
My friends and neighbors don't want to steal your job or kill you. They'd much rather sell you handmade goods or share a beer with you. Very friendly!
I could go on and on, and trust me I will, but I'm going to wrap this up for the night with one last photo. #CHINGATUMURO #FUCKYERWALL
One last thing, THANK YOU @BetoORourke for starting this thread, and for all that you do, and for speaking out and standing up for all of us. We are all in this together whether we choose to believe it or not. Keep fighting for what you know is right and I'll be there too! ✊
