I had a very interesting conversation with a gentleman who I have known to be very active in church. Lately, he is disillusioned. He told me a simple christian principle is 'when in doubt don't do it.'
Now. Lately church has taken very dubious money for Harrambees to build churches. "Ask any Christian around you," he said, "we would be happy to pray fervently under a tree until we can build the church with clean money. Why would church especially the 'old' ones take that money?
Much of the money that has been given to church is obviously fruits of corruption and theft of public money. What credibility would church have to speak out against corruption or theft in the public domain? Is this why the clergy are so quiet as Kenyans suffer?
I once had a convo with @bcharagu and I noted that the church does not have a strong record of holding its peers to account. Remember Kanyari of the Panda Mbegu fame? Remember the pastors using congregants money to live lavish lifestyles?
How is the church organised to keep everyone in check? What is the role of the church in 21C? How does the church inspire goodness in people outside its walls? How is the church to be seen to be different from the rest of us?
I remember the 80s (I was a kid) when then All Saints provost (now retired Bishop) Peter Njenga fought for the poor people of Muoroto slums whose were being summarily destroyed. mobile.nation.co.ke/blogs/cathedra…
@TimothyNjoya paid with his health many times for speaking out against the Moi regime. He was not alone. Bishop Alexander Muge paid with his life when he spoke against Mzee Moi's regime. bit.ly/2AjMxvX. We won't forget Fr. John A. Kaiser who was killed for speaking out.
