A few things about asylum.
Asylum isn't a big contributor to overall immigration. Apart from a spike in the early 2000s, it never has been. (Via @MigObs)
Most asylum claims are refused.
Even after appeal.
Relative to population, the number of asylum claims in the UK is well below the EU average.
And when it comes to saying 'yes' it's even lower.
There has been a recent spike in the number of people crossing the channel but in the grand scheme of things, these numbers are still very small. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-467221…

This needs repeating often. BBC interviewers, especially, need to understand this so that, every time a Brexter makes stuff up about not needing border checks, they can put him in his place.
I take no comfort from the thought of Jacob Rees-Mogg being tarred and feathered by an angry mob a few years from now. The damage will have been done by then.

Most of the people who claim the EU is trying to punish the UK also say they believe in market forces. Mogg, Hannan, Johnson, for example. (1)
But isn’t Brexit the ultimate market-testing of the UK’s international prestige? Is the UK an influential global power because we are just bloody good, or because it sits at the intersection of the EU, NATO and the Anglophone world? (2)
What happens when you take one element of that (the EU) away? Is the UK so bloody good that the EU will sacrifice its rules to maintain good relationships with us? Will other countries eagerly roll over their EU trade deals to include us? (3)

How would this Irish Sea border actually work? Would HMRC and DEFRA inspect under EU rules in NI? Would they collect tariffs for the EU, like a mini customs partnership?

Or would inspections be done by Irish government officials? And if so, wouldn’t that be a red rag to Unionists?
What would be the status of goods from NI? Would they be EU goods for Rules of Origin purposes? Who would negotiate that with EU trade partners?

Top Myths About #Asylum and why you should care:

Myth: Asylum seekers should file at US consulates in their home countries.

Reality: Asylum can only be sought at the border or inside the US. US consulates do not accept asylum applications.
Myth: Asylum seekers must present themselves at a port of entry.

Reality: The law (8 USC 1158) specifically says a person may apply for asylum whether they enter legally or not.

They can be technically prosecuted for unlawful entry, but that doesn't prevent asylum.
Myth: Asylum is only for political persecution, not for fear of gangs and terrorists.

Reality: There is NO requirement in the law that an asylum seeker's fear be politically based.

I've won many gang and terrorist related cases.

As a fmr immigration attorney let me be unambiguously clear. Crossing a boarder to claim asylum is *not* a crime; no under US or international law. Any child separated from a parent under that pretext is done so in direct contravention to the laws of the USA. ⚖ THREAD Pls RT.
If you came to the US without permission to apply for asylum, youmetjod of entry, whether legal or illegal *should* in no way effect your application process. Illegal entry is not a ground of inadmissibility for asylum applicants.
Unlike many other categories of applicants for immigration benefits, ppl seeking asylum in the US are not barred by having made an illegal entry; for example, sneaked across the U.S. border or overstaying a valid visa (one of the top ways people are in the country illegall).

1/ The conditions which allowed #WhereAreTheChildren to happen were created by the Obama admin. The recent Sessions policy of separating children from parents at the border will make things even worse for one reason no one really seems to be talking about. Let's talk about it.
2/ We have all heard by now that asylum-seeking parents will be separated from their children and detained. But it gets much, much worse.

They will also be legally orphaned.
3/ Asylum-seeking families have always been processed and released together and their cases joined for review in #ImmigrationCourts. The new Sessions approach is designed to not only reverse that policy, but to inflict maximum harm in the process.
