People are drawing the obvious connections here, but Darth Flake was only ever the apprentice. Here is the master. washingtonpost.com/opinions/mitt-…
The Trump presidency has been pretty corrosive, but then again policies that mainstream Republicans like Romney want and will promote and vote for are harmful and corrosive. And he signals his approval for them.
"Align U.S. corporate taxes" = tax giveaway to billionaires

"strip out excessive regulations" = environmental/consumer safeguards, measures to combat climate catastrophe

"reform criminal justice" = racist mass incarceration for profit

"appoint conservative judges" = fascism
Trump's rhetoric has been downright vile and evil, but just as corrosive is this McCaining process, in which a public figure knows he can signal rhetorical opposition to evil vile things that we all know he supports, and the rhetoric will be credited to him as virtue.
Some make the point there's value in having a senior Republican willing to oppose the president's tone, even as his votes support the president materially.

And there is.

It's a value to him. He's working for him.

A value to us would be somebody actually working for us.
A real value would be a senior Rep. who actually consistently breaks with his party in material ways—that means votes—to oppose the things he's already told us he knows are wrong, because the various policies he wants aren't worth his deeper values.

Anything less is worthless.
A real value would be a senior Republican who understands that the reason the world doesn't trust us has at least as much to do with the list of destructive, selfish, world-immolating policies Romney approves of and supports, as it does with Trump's corrosive tone and rhetoric.
Romney's pitch is to be the silver-tongued devil.

He just says the adjective loud and the noun he barely says at all.
Finally, Republicans have proved beyond any shadow of any doubt that they have nothing but scorn for the finer values Romney points toward:

Character? Honesty? Integrity? Comity? Mutual respect?

It's a joke.

That ship hasn't just sailed—it sank. They sank it. After burning it.
Believing that Romney cares in the slightest about character, integrity, comity, honesty, or mutual respect requires the same level of denial required by any enabler of any serial abuser.

Trump is useful as inescapable proof that no Republicans must ever be trusted again.
The Republican party’s entire thing right now is breaking our country into pieces and selling the parts, demolishing sustainable value to create obsene short-term profit for a tiny monied class.

yes and what exactly do you guys think Romney does anyway
Romney‘s entire career has been doing exactly that with a sad little smile on his face, and selling it as the reasonable grown-up decision.

The sadness is so you’ll see that he’s sorry. That way when he dies cable news will scold anyone for daring to mention what he did.
He’s a monster, as are they all, and the only way for them to show any honor is to leave the party publicly forever and in penance to never return to public life or ever dare profit from connections formed during their shameful careers betraying the people they pretended to serve
Other than that he’s cool though
