The accommodation policy in my school makes us change rooms every year. So every new session we have new rooms and and of course new roommates. This year my new roommate is Felicity. And funny enough she is also in my class.
The first time I met her I was trying to take an afternoon nap when she came in "Wazzup bitch, I'm Felicity. Wow you sleeping his hot afternoon! Ahh I don't like to sleep by this time o. I'm always super active by this time" and right there I knew we wouldn't get along so well
12:30pm
Thank God Felicity is not back yet. Felicity is one of those people who always had something to complain about. Everytime she comes home I can hear her from the stairs screaming about something. Hopefully, I can sleep for a minute before she gets back
"Girl, you won't believe what happened today "
Talk of the devil
" See eh if you know what happened to me you will jump up from that bed" Felicity was screaming and pacing now
"What happened? "
" I entered the front seat of a bus today only for one guy to and ask me to move inside because that seat was meant for men"
"What? Are you serious? " I was really trying hard to sound interested
and asked me to get down. Who told him the seat was for men? Did the manufacturers write "for men" on the seat? Stupid people. I didn't get down o lie lie I refused.
"Nawa o" at this point I just wanted to sleep
"Ahh I showed them something today. They thought that calling me an ashawo would make me change my mind. I don't know who told Nigerians that it is only ashawo that can stand up to a man! "
" It's okay. Stop shouting at least. Sorry you had to experience that"
" Nigerians need to be sensitized. All the transport people need to be taught that people have the right to sit anywhere for God's sakes!
"It's true " with one eye open and the other fast asleep.
" I need to call some people " and she left the room.
Halleluyah!
8:30am
Felicity and I are in class waiting for a lecture that is supposed to begin at 9:00am. It's SUG election season and the campaign is in full gear. Posters, banners and of course speeches.
8:40am
A pretty girl walks into our class. She goes over to the stage and begins to speak
"My name is Odera Eze but most of you know me as Lady Awesome. And I'm contesting for the position of the SUG president and I hope I have your support "
My classmates began to laugh. Felicity is laughing the loudest.
" Felicity, why are you laughing? "
"Did you hear that mumu girl? She is running for president! "
"And so? "
"A girl can't be president. It's not done! "
My mouth is wide open right now. This is going to be really interesting I say to myself.
" Girls shouldn't take the front seat of a bus either but you did yesterday " I clapped back
" That one is different "
"How? "
"We are talking about leadership here.Women are not good at it
" Says who? "
" See eh women are too emotional to be leaders. Women have too much baggage Biko. Imagine if our president was a woman taking maternity leave and all that. Can you imagine that?!"
"You haven't made a point yet"
" OK. What if she is PMSing or on her period sef do you know that kind of horrible decisions she would make"
" So? But it's her right as a student to contest for any position."
"Some rights are just there on paper but in real life ko le work joor"
"But you wanted to fight a conductor for saying the front seat was for men yesterday but here you are saying that SUG president is reserved for men. You called him stupid for saying the exact same thing you are saying right now. The two of you are stupid people"
She paused
"See I said what I said. Women don't make good leaders and I would rather vote the most incompetent man than vote Odera. Period."
8:56
Lecturer walks in
"Good morning class"
