A local Detroit station did a thoughtful fifteen minute interview with Tlaib following up on her comments. Unfortunately, the video is wrapped by a clicky “double down” story that entirely omits her rationale. clickondetroit.com/news/rep-rashi…
Tlaib has already done what the thread below is asking for, but people tend not to know it because the news business itself isn’t ready to invest in centering and explicating her ideas—rather than a basic conflict story—for a mass audience.
Tlaib also co-wrote this lengthy piece explaining her position, but you wouldn’t know it from much of the coverage of her today. freep.com/story/opinion/…
There’s also, of course, a large and growing literature from scholars and former government officials supporting Tlaib’s views on impeachment. Here’s Bob Bauer, who served as WH Counsel to President Obama. justsecurity.org/62080/coming-t…
Big media is not inclined to let impeachment advocates propound a lengthy case to the public through the media’s megaphone; the story they see is these people are in conflict with the president and their party’s leaders (which, as NYT shows, is also true). nytimes.com/2019/01/04/us/…
In a better world, we’d have more coverage of Tlaib’s ideas. In our world, the power necessary to present a substantive case to the public belongs to Dem House Chairs, who can hold public hearings. Backbenchers will struggle to be heard explaining themselves, even as they try.
