We suffer from a severe lack of societal imagination as to how things could be better. It means the past and future were inevitable and the track we’re on, no matter how dangerous and unfair, is fixed and inescapable.
There’s an entire industry dedicated to limiting that imagination and it operates everywhere. Politics. Industry. Every facet of society. And that business of derailing change is the largest and most profitable of them all.
At its heart is a really disingenuous alchemy that transforms arbitrary and created structures and narratives into laws of nature. Those that perform that trick are capable of wielding it to their advantage while also working outside of its lines.
What’s inspiring though is that in the face of thousands of years of fixed narratives and rigged systems, people still keep fighting against it to make things better, to change the world even while the world warns them against the dangers of change.
I’m studying the history of America and it’s just incredible how these people keep rising up against the waves and succeeding despite overwhelming circumstances and crushing power.
What’s becoming apparent is that the tide of America is controlled by those who effectively tell its story. The narrative is what drives this country and it’s anything but inevitable.
