1/ An interesting small detail re EU type approval is that all passenger cars (and light commercial vehicles) approved in the EU after March 31st require an eCall system.
2/ Wikipedia:
"The eCall initiative aims to deploy a device installed in all vehicles that will automatically dial 112 in the event of a serious road accident, and wirelessly send airbag deployment
3/ and impact sensor information, as well as GPS or Galileo coordinates to local emergency agencies. A manual call button is also provided."
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ECall
4/ According to Wikipedia a manual button is provided.
Law:
eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/…
5/ Law re manual button is less clear to me:
"‘eCall’ means an in-vehicle emergency call to 112, made either automatically by means of the activation of in-vehicle sensors or manually, which carries a minimum set of data and establishes an audio channel between [...]"
6/ The requirements regarding privacy are also interesting:
"The 112-based eCall in-vehicle system and the system providing private or added-value services should be designed in such a way that no exchange of personal data between them is possible."
7/ "Any processing of personal data through the 112-based eCall in-vehicle system should comply with the personal data protection rules [....] to guarantee that vehicles equipped with 112-based eCall in-vehicle systems, in their normal operational status related to 112 eCall,
8/ are not traceable and are not subject to any constant tracking and that the minimum set of data sent by the 112-based eCall in-vehicle system includes the minimum information required for the appropriate handling of emergency calls."
$TSLA e-call system
9/ Manual button confirmed: $TSLA
"Manufacturers shall demonstrate that new types of vehicles are constructed in such a way as to ensure that an eCall to the single European emergency number 112 can also be triggered manually."
10/ Seems the European $TSLA Model 3 will need an additional manual button to comply
"Manufacturers shall ensure that the manual trigger control of the 112-based eCall in-vehicle system is designed in such a way as to avoid mishandling."
11/ Forgot to specify: the deadline was March 31st 2018. $TSLA
12/ Interesting point. Picture is from 2016 (before legislation) though. Will need to see if a virtual button flies.
