Good response to my thread about Vienna coffee culture (linked to in this tweet), so here's the Top 5 reasons to get a cheap flight & check out their cafes... 
5. You are encouraged to sit and read. All cafes will have at least the national & the odd international paper. Many have a whole bunch of magazines in a whole bunch of languages. They want you to sit there all day, taking in current affairs.
4. The food is damn good. In addition to the famous cakes and pastries, any cafe worth its salt will do a range of small snack dishes - some do substantial mains. You won't go hungry.
3. In Vienna, being a cafe waiter isn't grunt work. It's a serious gig, with substantial cred. It's nice to have that kind of professionalism for a seemingly minor thing. The bloke taking your order might come off with a rather aloof air, but that's all part of the charm.
2. They are the place to see how the city really works. Many of the cafes, particularly the less touristy inner-city ones, have a fiercely loyal clientele of *all* socio-economic levels. You get to see a special kind of egalitarian space you don't get elsewhere.
1. There's *always* another cafe! The Innere-Stadt is crammed with old-school cafes (though much less than the 'Golden Age'. If one place is too crowded, just walk down the street - you'll find another, possibly even more awesome one! Here's a cool map...
