After conversations with people outside the twitter/Univeristy/Brexit-commenting bubble, many people are sick of hearing about Brexit and switching off the news when it comes on. /1
This suggests to me that any predications about what a deal/no deal/PV are likely to fall on deaf ears. And exaggeration is taken to be the norm. /2
Worryingly, I think there is a general ignorance about 'settled status' and what this means. I get the sense people who do not have a personal connection to an EU27 citizen think that people who are already here will have no problems and are allowed to stay as before. /3
There also seems to be a large amount scepticism about how bad things would get, particularly under a 'no deal' and that the logical outcome is that if the UK and EU want to still 'trade', then it will happen regardless. /4
This worries me, because it takes for granted that the gradual changes made to completing the single market etc over a long period of time could abruptly come to an end. And who knows what that would mean. /5
There is also the paradox of people being fed up with politicians not being able to get on with things, but the assumption and confidence that they will sort things out and there is no real 'danger'. This suggests a complacency about the democratic system. /6
In short, I don't see that a huge amount of ground has shifted since the referendum. This is a problem for both leave and remain, but the problem has its roots in the much longer-term issue in the UK that knowledge about the EU and what it does and does not do is pitiful. /END
